A New Beginning
Before leaving, Daniel stood near the door.
“I don’t expect forgiveness,” he said. “I only wanted you to know you were loved.”
Noah looked at him for a long moment.
Then he said quietly:
“I don’t know what you are to me yet… but I’d like to find out.”
Daniel smiled through tears.
After he left, the apartment felt still.
Noah stared at his mother’s letter again.
“All my life,” he said slowly, “I thought I had been abandoned.”
I squeezed his hand.
“But you weren’t.”
He looked at me.
“No,” he said softly. “I wasn’t.”
Then he smiled.
“And somehow, I found you.”
I leaned down and kissed his forehead.
The stranger who knocked on our door that morning hadn’t come to destroy our marriage.
He came to give my husband something he had been missing his whole life.
The truth.
